The withdrawl symptoms hit their peak, so Charlie seeks out Bartleby for help. He asks for a hit to help with the pain: Bartleby tells him not to be ridiculous and goes inside Charlie's mind, which is not a fun place to be. They're both relieved when he withdraws, taking the source of the pain with him. Charlie is sick on the floor and tells Bartleby what other symptoms they should expect, and Bartleby says he'd better stay with him. At first Charlie refuses--he won't be sleeping--but Bartleby says it's all right and then loans him a sweatshirt to replace the one he's been wearing for the last few days. Even so Charlie can't get warm so Bartleby gets into bed with him. Charlie observes he smells like fresh bread. Bartleby asks about Charlie's band (the details of which were canonized later, so . . .), and then about the addiction. Charlie tells his story, then explains how music begins with the heartbeat. Bartleby explains a little more about why he's at Milliways and says he's not a nice person. Charlie disagrees, but is selfishly glad for whatever screwups Bartleby made that brought him here. Charlie says he'll never be great, and Bartleby says he's one of the shining ones. Charlie wonders about their purposes here and finds himself hitting mildy on Bartleby, who doesn't notice and talks about his Fool instead. Bartleby says he's the jealous type but isn't sure if his Fool loves him or not. They decide to try and sleep with hopes for good dreams.
